Norfolk-based 14-year-old Oliver Coe developed a passion for learning Chinese 6 years ago, despite being unable to learn it at school. With the help of private tutor Jing Song, he has just passed his GCSE Mandarin with flying colours – achieving an A* grade two years before most teenagers take the exam.
According to the Eastern Daily Press, his studies have been something of a community effort. If his mum was working after school, Oliver would spend time with his neighbours who would help test his knowledge of the language, including the 170 Chinese characters required for the exam.
Oliver now wants to visit China to try out his new language skills. He said, “I would love to see the Great Wall of China. I would love to see the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace, and go on the Yangtze and see the pandas.”
Oliver’s story shows how private tuition can be the key to unlocking a huge array of hidden talents. On The Tutor Pages, you can contact Chinese tutors for free, and search for tutors in almost any other conceivable subject.
